Since 2015, we have employed Gallery Animateurs to enhance the in-gallery experience at the Varley Art Gallery, engaging visitors in welcoming, conversational, and hands-on ways.

In 2024, the Gallery recorded its highest attendance in history, welcoming 62,373 visitors. By comparison, between January 1 and September 30, 2024, attendance reached 49,568. In the same period in 2025, attendance has already surpassed that figure, with 51,994 visitors—demonstrating continued growth in public demand and reach.

During the 2025 summer exhibition season, Gallery Animateurs directly engaged 7,773 visitors through informal in-gallery interactions, 348 people through guided tours, and 489 participants through drop-in activities. These activations included exhibition interpretation, facilitated conversations, and creative engagement opportunities designed to make art more accessible to all ages.

We design all programming to reflect and support the diverse communities of Markham, ensuring the gallery experience remains welcoming, interactive, and relevant.
