Humans of the Varley: Cheryl Rego

In 2003, I started at the Varley Art Gallery in a part-time position in Visitor Services. I the chance to work in the town that I have lived in since I moved to Canada, at a culturally rich place where I could meet interesting people from all walks of life. Over time, I was given the opportunity to get more involved in Public Programs at the gallery, an area I had great interest in and one that I could apply my interests, passion and skills towards. I’ll admit at first, I was very nervous and wasn’t sure it was something that I would be very good at. However, one constant at the gallery from the very beginning is the wonderful staff here, who come together to support and encourage each other and are committed to helping everyone on the team whenever possible. It was something that you don’t experience often; they didn’t laugh at my often crazy ideas, they helped to make them happen! Over the years, although I’m proud of many professional achievements at the gallery, like the expansion of our art programs, building meaningful partnerships with arts and community organizations and championing events like PechaKucha Markham , I am most proud of working with a wonderful team of people, who work tirelessly to engage the community through innovative and inclusive programming. The Varley will always be in my heart, it is where I was able to grow professionally and personally, and meet so many people who I consider lifelong friends.
